Idaho Goes Live with OpenGov Transparency Portal - State Controller Brandon Woolf said Idaho residents deserve a user-friendly, searchable expenditure database to hold agencies accountable and to build trust. The portal adds a layer of detail not possible in previous efforts. Nine months ago, Idaho embarked on a mission to create a user-friendly, searchable government expenditure database for residents. Transparent Idaho, designed by OpenGov, launched last week and features visual representations of agency spending, the ability to share findings on social media, a new desktop and mobile interface, and data that is updated nightly. OpenGov is included in the 2019 GovTech 100, an annual list that highlights companies focused on making a difference in and selling to state and local government agencies. Join the OpenGov team

How We Grew Our Organic Traffic to Over 1 Million Monthly Visitors in Under a Year - "Like many things at G2, it’s something we patched together with a group of intelligent, motivated, problem-solving people who barely knew what they were doing at the start (perhaps me less than anyone). Nobody had ever gathered hundreds of thousands of software reviews before. Now, our team is quickly approaching a million reviews. When I started four years ago we’d published roughly 10 research reports ever; now we publish thousands every quarter." Join the G2 team

MLS, SeatGeek Celebrate Female Fans With 'We Fan' Marketing Campaign - As a younger demographic gravitates towards the game, Major League Soccer (MLS) continues to grow at an explosive rate with 2018 marking the league’s most successful season. New stadiums opened in Los Angeles and Washington D.C., and the MLS Cup attracted record-breaking attendance. 73,019 fans packed Mercedes-Benz stadium to watch the championship match featuring Atlanta United’s 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers. Two months later, that same venue hosted the 2019 Super Bowl with roughly 3,000 fewer fans. Let that sink in. An American soccer league that many doubted whether it would measure up to elite international leagues – let alone thrive in the home of gridiron football – outdrew the Super Bowl. Succeeding in professional sports does not happen overnight – it requires forward-thinking leaders, unwavering financial support, and dedicated strategic partners. Perhaps one of MLS’ most invaluable partnerships is with ticket marketplace, SeatGeek. Founded in 2009, SeatGeek “operates a mobile-focused ticket platform and a ticket search engine that enables fans to buy and sell tickets for sports, concert, and theater events.” As the league’s official ticketing partner and primary ticketer for six clubs, SeatGeek is looking to reach fans wherever they are. Raytheon, AirMap team for UAS in the national airspace - Raytheon signed an agreement with AirMap on 19 June to collaborate on future projects regarding UAS being integrated into the national airspace system. The companies hope that the agreement will demonstrate the positive economic and social benefits of commercial drone operations on a greater scale. ‘AirMap is ushering in a new era in drone aviation,’ said Matt Gilligan, vice president of Raytheon's Intelligence, Information and Services business. ‘Drones must safely operate in an already complex ecosystem, which is where our experience matters.’ The agreement will bring together the expertise of both companies. Capsule in the New York Times - Dr. Seth Finkelstein, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Manhattan who has become frustrated with traditional pharmacies, has been suggesting Capsule to his patients. “Every time a patient calls me telling me a prescription can’t be filled, or I have to call insurance for preauthorization, that’s my time or my staff’s time, and that’s money and time diverted to taking care of other people,” he said. “The pharmacy should be taking care of this.” Capsule’s “insurance specialists,” who help doctors with preauthorizations, are better at dealing with insurance companies than the pharmacists at chain stores, Dr. Finkelstein said. Join the Capsule team

Sheffield United tap SeatGeek as ticketing partner - English soccer side Sheffield United have appointed SeatGeek as the club’s official primary ticketing partner on a multi-year deal. Santa Monica College Launches Micro-Scholarship Program with RaiseMe- The new RaiseMe Micro-scholarship Program allows students to begin earning scholarships directly from the four-year institution they plan to transfer to, officials said. The program -- which is a pilot for Southern California -- is being launched in partnership with Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a top SMC transfer destination. "The RaiseMe platform compliments our efforts so it just made sense for SMC to help pilot the program in Southern California,” said Dr. Janet Robinson, SMC Transfer Center faculty leader. “The number of RaiseMe partners offering micro-scholarships to community college students will continue to grow over time, so we're excited for what the partnership will mean for SMC students.” Participating students are rewarded with incremental “micro-scholarships” for their strong academic performance, involvement in extracurricular activities and other achievements, officials said. Students, for example, earn $125 for each “A” earned in a 100-level course, $100 for each leadership position in an activity (up to $200 per year) and $200 for being a member of Phi Theta Kappa. The money a student accrues "represents a guaranteed minimum of financial aid that they would receive upon applying and being accepted to a participating school." Join the RaiseMe team

MealPal offers affordable lunch options for Baruch students - Finding affordable options for lunch is a struggle at Baruch College, which does not have a cafeteria or offer meal plans. While some students bring their own lunch, most students prefer the fastest and cheapest options that are closest to Baruch. MealPal is an app that essentially works like a meal plan that allows its users to choose their meals from various restaurants. The “kitchen” is open between 5 p.m. and 10:30 a.m., meaning that users have the afternoon the day before and the morning of order their meals. Most restaurants allow users to pick up meals starting at 11:45 a.m. or noon. Customers are asked to scan their code from the MealPal app in order to pick up their meal. The prices vary according to the number of meals you have in your plan — the options are 12 or 20. Discounts constantly change based on different marketing strategies or timed offers— for instance, if users sign up with their emails for the first time you usually get a 40 percent off. Join the MealPal team

Saskatoon tech company using AI for restaurant scheduling - Gone are the days of Excel schedules, according to 7shifts CEO Jordan Boesch who was on Gormley on Thursday. “The next wave is really around further artificial intelligence when it comes to managing labour and staff and engagement,” said Boesch. Boesch said restaurants tell him labour is among the biggest challenges they face. “Scheduling is becoming more complex. There’s more of an on-demand workforce now than there ever has been.” The company does an analysis, looking at past scheduling behaviours, who works well together and why. It also takes several factors into account, including the weather and historical sales, to create the most efficient schedule for each restaurant. Boesch explained their technology reaches beyond labour management into staff retention as well. He said managers can take that data and create a better culture in their workplace to make it a place where staff want to work. Join the 7Shifts team

We continued to expand our incredible team—growing from 75 to 250 full-time Capsules, and adding hundreds of couriers to deliver your medications by hand wherever and whenever you want them. RaiseMe & Guided Pathways: Creating a roadmap for transfer student successRaiseMe seeks to illustrate, as soon as students start their two year degree, what kinds of achievements and habits will keep them on track to graduate and transfer. For each achievement reached students can earn micro-scholarships that offset the cost of their four year degree, which provides a constant feedback loop of how their decisions today impact their future. The achievements that RaiseMe focuses on align with key performance indicators developed by AACC, reinforcing the message that early, frequent, and prompt feedback on a student’s progress is going to help keep them on track. Other ways, aside from micro-scholarship offerings, that RaiseMe may align with your institution’s work around Guided Pathways includes: Intrusive Advising: RaiseMe’s free educator portal allows advisors to see the schools your students are interested in transferring to, their portfolio of activities, and how much they are earning. First Year Experience: RaiseMe has transfer focused classroom materials that discuss early planning, financial literacy, and more! Early Intervention: RaiseMe allows students to forecast how much they can earn with different combinations of final grades. Virtru Secures FedRAMP authorization, an Important Step to Government Digital Transformation - FedRAMP has raised the bar in cloud security and digital transformation. We are thrilled to be part of this initiative by bringing the Virtru Data Protection Platform to the FedRAMP. Each cloud service offering (CSO) is assessed across three security objectives: confidentiality, integrity, and availability. These are centered on the NIST SP 800-53 control requirements and are categorized into low, moderate, and high impact based on the sensitivity of the data. Virtru was authorized with moderate impact. They define Moderate Impact systems as accounting “for nearly 80% of CSP applications that receive FedRAMP authorization and is most appropriate for CSOs where the loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability would result in serious adverse effects on an agency’s operations, assets, or individuals.” As only the 128th solution authorized, Virtru joins an elite group of providers on the FedRAMP marketplace.   Join the Virtru team

Ensuring Safety While Fostering Drone Commerce with UTM and U-space - From AirMap Chairman Ben Marcus: It’s important to identify how the FAA has really led the world in developing LAANC. The FAA is really far ahead of everyone else when it comes to authorizing flights in controlled airspace, so we’re very appreciative of the partnership with the FAA for that. The same concept is coming to Europe. LAANC is available to Europe through the AirMap UTM Platform. We’re offering it to any country that wants to use LANNC, and many are. As I mentioned, Swiss U-space will go live later this year, powered by AirMap. You’ll be able to operate in controlled airspace in Switzerland through a very similar interface as you use in the United States. Countries are increasingly shifting towards digital authorization, led by the FAA and LAANC. AirMap expects to see authorities experiment with standardizing their waivers process for complex operations, accelerating the timeline for new commercial models. We’re also seeing opportunities for operators for in Remote ID, conformance monitoring tactical deconfliction, 3D terrain and elevation data, SORA, and more. Join the AirMap team

She says MealPal benefits both the business and the buyer. "Because we're sending restaurants a high volume of orders for the exact same thing, they're getting really good efficiency and economies of scale at making the same thing. We're able to buy meals from them at a discounted price and we're able to pass some of those savings on to the consumer," says Biggins. Join the MealPal team

Boxed CEO sees 2019 as a 'breakout year' Boxed's technology, which Huang and his engineering team built from the ground up, was the selling point for that deal, CEO Chieh Huang said, and may represent the company's greatest competitive advantage. This includes order management systems, mobile technology, software that monitors and lists product expiration dates and automated robots that wheel packages around its warehouses. New Investment

We are proud to support CEO Jordan Boesch and the entire talented team at 7Shifts in their mission to help restaurant managers schedule, evaluate, and communicate with their workforce while saving time and reducing costs.

Join the 7Shifts team in Saskatoon and Toronto!

January 2019 / December 2018 Updates from Our Entrepreneurs

7shifts Secures $10 Million in Funding to Accelerate Growth of Its Restaurant Labor Management Solution - 7shifts has scheduled nearly 100 million shifts for the 16 million restaurant workers in the US, and collectively saved restaurateurs over $200 million in labor costs. The rapidly growing platform is used by more than 250,000 restaurant professionals and 10,000 restaurants, including large, growing franchises such as Bareburger, Panera, Honeygrow, &pizza, and Smoke’s Poutinerie. 7shifts is set to accelerate its growth further with the announcement that it has received a $10 million Series A funding round. The financing was led by Napier Park Financial Partners with participation from Teamworthy Ventures, existing investor, Relay Ventures. Join the 7Shifts team

G2 Crowd Acquires Siftery Following $100 Million in Funding - Siftery can uncover when a business has a case of “shadow IT,” such as when three separate teams each buy 50-seats for a software solution rather than a single 150-seat subscription at half the price. Similarly, it can spot when a company is paying for more seats than it has employees, and help make recommendations to reduce spend. Siftery also monitors the technology that a million companies use which enable buyers to discover what technology their industry peers and competitors use. By combining the Siftery data on technology spend and stack with G2 Crowd’s product reviews, G2 Crowd will be able to uniquely recommend best-fit software to all businesses and seamlessly connect them to the best-fit vendors to make purchases. “We believe that everyone in business deserves the right to reach their potential — and the only way they can do that is through a trusted marketplace that’s free to access, and is not pay-to-play,” said Godard Abel, co-founder and CEO of G2 Crowd. “Every day, new and potentially disruptive technologies and services are released into the world. Anyone who wants great software to perform at their best, from intern to CEO, should be able to quickly discover, buy, and manage the best technology for their business. G2 Crowd has become known as a place where you can discover and buy great software. With the acquisition of Siftery, we’re now able to help businesses manage their investment and use of software,” Abel said. Join the G2 Crowd team

As pharmacy startup Capsule makes plans to expand, staff size to double - “Do you want to get health care in a drugstore? What has changed in the world to suggest that is true? MinuteClinic has existed for 15 years,” CEO Eric Kinariwala said. “When I think about where the puck is going, where consumer behavior is going, I just don’t see any evidence that is how people want to consume health care. They want to consume health care the way they consume everything else in their lives, which is on their phone.” Since Capsule received a $50 million funding round in August, the company has kicked off a senior talent hiring spree, bringing on Dorothy Gemmell, former chief commercial officer at online therapy startup AbleTo; Ben Pfeifer, former GM of editorial at Shutterstock; Douglas De Angelo, a former VP at Walmart’s Jet; and Julie Sommerville, a former director of engineering at Blue Apron. The growth plans include tripling the size of the product engineering team and doubling the number of sales employees in New York City, Kinariwala said. Join the Capsule team

Ibotta Hits $500 Million Milestone - To CEO Bryan Leach, it’s more than just a big number. This week, his Denver-based shopping app Ibotta announced it had given back $500 million to users. The half-billion-dollar milestone took six years to hit, accelerating each year as the tech startup continues its rapid growth. More than $190 million in rewards were redeemed in 2018, a record year for that specific metric. “Any company has some kind of service that helps someone, but we’re giving someone money,” Leach said in an interview with Denver Business Journal. “And that money turns into food, health care, shelter, education..." Join the Ibotta team

The subscription lunch service, headquartered in New York, has expanded to downtown L.A. and Century City with daily lunch options from such restaurants as Tender Greens, Lemonade, Everytable, Piknic, Sweetfin Poke and Pez Cantina for less than six bucks per meal. “With many of the healthiest fast casual restaurants in the world calling Los Angeles home, it is a perfect market for MealPal,” said co-founder and CEO Mary Biggins in a statement. “We are excited to connect people working in DTLA and Century City with their favorite restaurants in an affordable and fun way.” Join the MealPal team

Remind, Verizon Settle Dispute, Allowing Customers to Continue Receiving SMS Messages - After a dispute over a newly imposed fee, Verizon and Remind, a popular app for schools and students to communicate, have worked out a deal that will allow Verizon customers to continue to send and receive text messages through the platform. "We have heard from Verizon that they don’t have plans to change the fee structure applicable to Remind for SMS messaging," Grey said in a statement on Thursday. "This means we will no longer be forced to shut off text notifications for Verizon Wireless customers using Remind. There will be no service disruptions for Verizon Wireless customers." Remind, founded in 2011, is a private messaging platform with about 31 million monthly users in schools nationwide that allows students, teachers, administrations and parents to communicate with one another about assignments and announcements. Join the Remind team

Boxed Scores 3-month Exclusive on New Smartwater Line - Coca-Cola has introduced two new Smartwater products with Boxed, the manufacturer announced this week. The online bulk retailer will be the exclusive national retailer of Smartwater’s alkaline and antioxidant-enhanced waters through March 2019, supporting sales insights and a launch party before the products hit store shelves later this year, according to the company. "During the early launch period, Boxed will partner with Coca-Cola on creative marketing tactics and provide early insights and data on how consumers are reacting to these two new items," Ankit Patel, Boxed's director of merchandising told Grocery Dive. Join the Boxed team

University of Utah Announces Income Share Agreement Program - The University of Utah today announced the launch of Invest in U, a pilot program designed to help students pay education-related costs so they can complete their degrees faster and launch their professional careers. The U is the first major university in the Western region to offer its students this type of financial assistance. "Through Invest in U, the University of Utah is investing in our students to help them succeed, recognizing that many students start and stop their educations based on finances,” said U President Ruth Watkins. “The University of Utah has a well-earned reputation for innovation in a state known for its efforts to ensure access to affordable higher education,” said Tonio DeSorrento, founder and CEO of Vemo Education. “This new program is the next step in the university’s pioneering efforts to create pathways to opportunity that support a new generation of students.” Join the Vemo team

MM LaFleur’s mission to “take the work out of dressing for work” resonated with enough Houston women to warrant a showroom - CEO Sarah LaFleur: "I didn’t actually have much of a network in Houston, but we saw all these orders coming in from the Houston area and we were like, what is going on here? It was kind of to our delight and surprise. A lot of them said they heard about us from friend that they had in the D.C. area—that was kind of a lightbulb moment for us, the style similarities between Houston and D.C. This was truly a city of happy coincidences where we found a pocket of customers who were very much looking for something like MM.LaFleur. Houston really grew organically. We really want to get to know our customers better, so we’re launching a variety of events and workshops at our showroom. Up until recently it’s been really focused on the shopping experience, but we’re hoping to do more community-oriented events, book tours—we’ve got some great authors coming through, and they’ll be stopping by our showroom." Join the MM.Lafleur team

Lively Drops Investment Fees, Offers No-Fee Health Savings Account - Lively, Inc., creators of the modern Health Savings Account (HSA), today announced the elimination of all fees to enable investments in their HSA starting on January 1, 2019. This makes Lively a truly no-fee HSA for individuals and families. Unlike Lively, most HSAs come with a laundry list of fees that often include monthly maintenance, account opening, funds transfer, debit cards, excess contributions, point of sale, minimum balance, reimbursement, and account closure fees. HSA fees directly inhibit a consumer’s ability to reduce out-of-pocket costs and maximize their health savings.
“Traditional HSA providers charge their customers hidden fees that can exceed thousands of dollars in lost savings,” said Alex Cyriac, CEO and Co-Founder of Lively. “Combined with rising yearly healthcare costs, this means consumers are losing money on both sides making it difficult to not only afford healthcare costs today, but also the $280,000 of expected healthcare expenses in retirement.” Join the Lively team

Now, it’ll be easier for people to store and use tickets for tons of events in the Google Pay app,” Product Manager for Google Pay, Ankit Prasad, said. “They’ll have access to everything they need, right on their phones.” Dallas Gutauckis, Director of Mobile Engineering at SeatGeek, said SeatGeek has always “championed an open ecosystem for live events,” and this new partnership will allow fans to have another way to save and use their purchased tickets. Join the SeatGeek team

Ibotta Mobile Commerce Report Finds 47 Percent of Consumers Prefer Shopping Via Mobile - "Mobile has changed every aspect of the shopping experience. From the way consumers shop, to the way they research purchases and make decisions about what to buy and even how they engage with the brands they love," said Bryan Leach, Founder and CEO of Ibotta. "Everyone's shopping behavior is different and unique to them, and brands cannot expect customer loyalty with a one-size-fits-all approach. The goal of Ibotta's inaugural Mobile Commerce Reportis to highlight the shift in mobile shopping behavior while providing insight into the best ways to attract and retain loyal customers." Join the Ibotta team

Factual, Ibotta Identify Unique Behavior Based On Location, Purchase Data -  For example, if the consumer consistently goes to the grocery store to buy avocados, tortillas, and salsa, there is a high probability they would be interested in dining at Chipotle, Qdoba, or Taco Bell explains Mike Dadlani, vice president of media and partnerships at Ibotta. The data also analyzes grocery store purchases and determines which consumers have a higher propensity to dine at a Mexican restaurant. The audience segments for programmatic targeting can be used across a variety of demand-side platforms (DSPs) and data management providers (DMPs) such as Google and LiveRamp. “When you pair the data, it allows marketers to get a lot more creative,” Dadlani said. Historically, consumer product goods companies, retailers and restaurants needed to choose between two types of data -- either location or purchase. The “unique” partnership aims to help advertisers further personalize the experience for consumer based on what they buy, where they buy it, and when they make the purchase, explains Glen Straub, vice president at Factual.  Join the Factual team

OpenGov fall festival focuses on powering more effective government - When the fire hit, Galbraith had never used OpenGov Stories – a solution that helps governments more effectively share information with their communities and across their organizations using easy-to-use web pages that combine data, images, maps, videos, and text - to disseminate recovery information to Shasta County and Redding residents. She had to learn how to use the platform under extreme pressure, taking care to provide as much information to the public as possible while also acting as a sort of gatekeeper to guard against misinformation. In 48 hours over a weekend, Galbraith and a tiger team of OpenGov employees were able to post 15 stories and host one virtual town hall. In total, the city was able to respond to 106 questions from citizens. In the first two days, over 30,000 residents visited the site. After the immediate threat of the fire had dissipated, the platform became a one-stop shop for recovery and rebuilding information. Join the OpenGov team

Capsule Raises $50M to Modernize The Pharmacy Experience - Interview with Capsule CEO Eric Kinariwala: "At Capsule, we have obsessed over what it means to rebuild the pharmacy experience to meet the modern consumer’s rapidly evolving expectations, giving our customers the control over their healthcare that they have come to expect in every other part of their life. Our unique model provides access — in person, by phone, SMS, chat, or email — to the timeless warmth and expertise of a pharmacist who is using technology to view your full health record. And our trackable two-hour delivery windows eliminate all of the inefficiencies of both conventional mail order and traditional brick and mortar pharmacies. SeatGeek Teams With Lyft to Drop Fans Closer to Their Seats - A new partnership between SeatGeek and the ridesharing company Lyft will ensure that fans are being dropped off near the gate closest to their seats. As part of the deal, fans who request a Lyft ride through the SeatGeek app will automatically have their seat location featured in the Lyft app, which will then direct Lyft drivers to the closest gate. “Our partnership with Lyft is a perfect example of what openness can do for fans, and what has been lacking in this industry,” said SeatGeek Co-Founder Russ D’Souza, in a statement. “This is innovation that will noticeably improve the fan experience, as we look for more ways to make it easier to access and enjoy live events.” SeatGeek views this Lyft partnership as a first step in many plans to improve the experience for fans traveling to major stadiums for live events. It claims that fans could save as many as 30 minutes by no longer having to wander around the stadium after being dropped off on the opposite side. The partnership, which kicks off next season at Major League Soccer’s Portland Timbers’ Providence Park, also gives Lyft riders exclusive discounts when booking from the SeatGeek app. Join the SeatGeek team

Denver's Top Tech Jobs - For Ibotta, the recruiting focus swings heavily on culture, not “gimmicks” like on-tap kombucha, founder and CEO Bryan Leach said. The Denver-born business, which provides cash back rewards to shoppers who log purchases in its free mobile app, employs 550 people around the world, close to 500 in Denver alone. “Ultimately, we care about what the people who work here think about our mission to improve the lives of millions of consumers by saving them time and money, precious resources they can turn into food, health care, education and shelter,” Leach said. “I think especially younger people want to feel the moral relevance of their work, so mission is very, very important.” It doesn’t hurt that Leach is advertising seven straight years of growth exceeding 40 percent at Ibotta. “Winning is something people want to be part of,” he says. Join the Ibotta team

How G2 Crowd Wants to Stop Billions in Wasted Software - Nobody likes to waste anything--whether it’s leftover food, time sitting in traffic or, least of all, unused software sitting on a data center shelf. With this thought comes the following data point, one that came to the fore this week: U.S. companies wasted a whopping $30 billion last year on software that went unused. That’s $259 annually per user, as calculated by 1E, a security consulting firm. G2 Crowd, an online platform for users to share business software reviews in real time, has taken it as a personal challenge to stop--or at least curtail--the buying of software that will never get used in production. G2 Crowd’s first quarterly Momentum Grid Report, launched Aug. 15, is aimed to assist line-of-business buyers in selecting software packages that will meet their needs now and in the future. This new report series identifies trending products based on a proprietary algorithm to help buyers plan for the future, the Chicago-based company said. Join the G2 Crowd team

Using an Income Share Agreement to Afford College - Vemo Education CEO Tonio DeSorrento says some schools offer ISAs as a form of financial aid to help students "come there and stay there," since the cost of college can exceed the federal student loan limit for undergraduates; the maximum amount most undergraduates can take out in subsidized and unsubsidized direct loans is set at $31,000 by the Department of Education. At Messiah College, students who opt for the school's ISA will pay between 3 and 3.5 percent of their future income for a set period of time. Payments are waived if a graduate's salary drops below $25,000 a year. Other schools design their ISA agreements to target specific segments of their student population. At Norwich University, ISA agreements are only available to students who would have relied on the now-defunct federal Perkins loan program and/or undergrads who have exceeded four years of institutional aid, grants that help reduce the cost of attendance. Norwich CFO Lauren Wobby says the military college introduced its ISA to reduce financial barriers and increase degree completion. Learn more about Income Share Agreements and Vemo Education

According to research from The College Board, though 80% of community college students intend to transfer to a four-year college, yet only 25% successfully transfer of the population successfully does, and just 17% eventually graduate within six years. With RaiseMe for Transfers, students at community colleges nationwide will now have the opportunity to concurrently earn micro-scholarships towards their four-year college of their choice while pursuing their Associate’s degrees — just like millions of high school students have already done before them. Join the RaiseMe team

Areas of continued focus include: Handheld technology to increase sales: Toast Go™, a fully integrated mobile point-of-sale device designed by Toast, transforms how restaurateurs run and staff their business. Odd Duck – a full service restaurant in Austin, Texas – increased revenue by over $500,000 and reduced server turnover as tips grew by $7,000 per server, annually, with Toast Go.  Back of house technology to increase speed of service: Eventide, an innovative seafood concept in Boston, introduced a continued service model powered by Toast. Galvanize acquires Hack Reactor, raises $32M - Denver-based computer coding training school Galvanize is to acquire competitor Hack Reactor in a deal that brings together two of the largest privately held coding boot camps, the two companies told Reuters. Interview with Eric Kinariwala, CEO of Capsule, a next-generation pharmacy that is here to make your life simpler and healthier - "At Capsule, the promise we make to our customers is “everybody needs some looking after sometimes” — that we’ll make your life easy and anticipate your needs. We work hard every day to translate that to how we operate internally and how the team looks after one another. It’s that alignment between how we internally operate the business and treat each other and externally with how we deliver on our promise to our customers that makes Capsule special. Insurance pricing for medication is opaque and complicated. Our “looking after” promise to our customers means that our team proactively lets them know what we know, what we don’t know (and anticipate they’ll want to know), and a timeline for next steps so they’re not left guessing when they’ll hear from us again. Similarly, when we’re launching a new product internally, our product managers provide the same kind of context to our team — what we built, how we’re going to measure success, and when we’re going to measure it. In this way, our team feels looked after by our product managers — like no stone has gone unturned — and is thereby able to internalize this level of confidence to drive trust and confidence in our relationships with our customers." Join the Capsule team

Factual Case Study: Twin Peaks Wins at Game Time with Location Data - Twin Peaks, a chain of sports bars and restaurants, was looking to drive avid sports fans who enjoyed watching sports while eating and drinking to their restaurants. To increase foot traffic, Twin Peaks’ agency of record, The Infinite Agency partnered with Adobe Advertising Cloud for a highly-targeted campaign across mobile, tablet, and desktop, featuring pre-roll video creative. The campaign targeted sports enthusiasts aged 21-54 through contextual, behavioral, and geo-targeting strategies. Using Factual’s Geopulse Audience, they created a custom ‘Twin Peaks’ Restaurant Diners’ segment reaching users who had recently visited a Twin Peaks restaurant. They also leveraged Geopulse Proximity to geofence Twin Peaks’ locations to reach nearby users in real-time with dayparting to deliver relevant messaging (i.e. lunch vs dinner). Factual’s placements outperformed the overall CTA by 2x and overall campaign goal CTR by 3x, reporting a Factual placement CTR of 0.95%. Factual’s placements also earned a higher VCR of 70%, compared to the overall VCR of 67%. The CTR goal for this campaign was .23%, the overall CTR reported was 0.5%. Join the Factual team

Space53 Partners with AirMap to Bring UTM to the Netherlands - Local industries and governments in the East Netherlands are empowering commercial drone applications to benefit their communities and economy. Space53, a site for the safe development, testing, and research of unmanned systems, is partnering with AirMap to experiment and analyze different UTM (UAS traffic management) solutions. The partnership aims to support growing demand for commercial drone applications in the Netherlands. Space53 and AirMap are deploying a simple procedure for registering and monitoring drone flights in local Dutch airspace. Airspace controllers, local municipal officials, and managers of critical infrastructure will be able to manage UAS activities via the AirMap UTM Dashboard. Pilots can request automated flight authorization from airspace controllers, who manage these requests and monitor ongoing operations directly from the cloud-based dashboard. Join the AirMap team

Norwich University launches Income Share Agreement Program - Norwich University, the oldest private military college in the United States, today announced a new income share agreement initiative aimed at improving affordability, student retention, and degree completion. Beginning in fall 2018, Norwich undergraduate students will have the opportunity to opt into an innovative financing model in which they will pay reduced tuition in exchange for a set percentage of income after graduation over a set period of time. "Norwich University is committed to offering this new way to help pay for college in a way that aligns incentives and helps reduce financial barriers to degree completion," Norwich University Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer Lauren Wobby said. "The new Norwich ISA program has the potential to increase educational access and attainment for our students." To develop its ISA program, Norwich tapped Vemo Education, a Virginia-based education technology company that works with higher education institutions to design, implement, and maintain income share agreement initiatives. Last year, Vemo powered $23 million of ISAs at a cross-section of colleges and universities across the country, including Purdue University, Lackawanna College in Pennsylvania, and Clarkson University in New York. "In many cases, the college degree remains a prerequisite for social and economic mobility -- but rising costs and questions about affordability often lead students to underinvest in their higher education or not finish their degree program," said Tonio DeSorrento, Co-founder and CEO of Vemo Education. "Income share agreements can address this challenge, supporting college-going aspiration among the students who can benefit the most from higher education." Learn more about Income Share Agreements and Vemo Education

"Selling tickets through Snapchat is a massive opportunity to reach fans in a new way," added Doug Dawson, vice president of ticket sales for the Dallas Cowboys, which owns the venue. "This is a really exciting example of SeatGeek's open distribution approach to ticketing, and we're looking forward to working with performers that come through our venues to put tickets in front of their Snapchat followers." In the coming months, SeatGeek and Snapchat are expected to work together to add more events to the integration. SeatGeek provides ticketing for AT&T Stadium (home of the Cowboys) and Banc of California Stadium (home of LAFC). Learn more about SeatGeek Enterprise

Toast Reveals “Restaurant Success in 2018” Industry Report - Nearly 60 percent of restaurateurs indicate that hiring, training and retaining staff are among the top areas of opportunity for the industry, according to a survey unveiled today by Toast. The “Restaurant Success in 2018” Industry Report results also suggest optimizing speed and efficiency, as well as attracting and retaining customers, are the second and third most crucial challenges, respectively, for restaurateurs in 2018. “While attracting and retaining talent remains the highest priority for restaurants, our research into the key drivers of restaurant success found that top restaurateurs are often more focused than their peers on optimizing their business for performance,” said Aman Narang, president and co-founder of Toast. “As the leading platform committed to helping restaurants delight guests, do what they love, and thrive, we’re excited to provide restaurants of all sizes with free access to the insights and tools they need to grow their business.”

Additional key findings include:

  • 89 percent of restaurateurs say they are optimistic for their restaurant's sales in 2018
  • 63 percent of restaurateurs advertise on social media, dropping from 75 percent in 2017
  • 47 percent admit to scheduling employees to work fewer hours each week
  • 11 percent say reservations are crucial for their POS, despite surging guest demand

Pennsylvania’s Private College Association Recognizes Income Share Agreements as Innovative Solution for Paying for College - The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) today announced that it has approved the education finance pioneer Vemo Education (Vemo) as a member-preferred program for Pennsylvania colleges and universities looking to implement income share agreements, a new approach to student finance. "Affordability has always been a cornerstone of our efforts to help students succeed in college and beyond," said Mark Volk, president of Lackawanna College, an AICUP member that launched an income share agreement program in late 2017.  "Our new income share agreement program is transforming the way we help students from all backgrounds finance their education, and we are excited to see AICUP recognizing the potential of ISAs." "We serve a diverse group of 91 colleges and universities across Pennsylvania -- but despite their differences, our members are all in search of innovative solutions to help students afford  their education," said Tim Alexander, Vice President of Finance and Administration of AICUP. "We expect that as they learn about this new preferred program, our members will find income share agreements to be a new tool to reduce barriers to enrollment and retention. And colleges that offer income share agreements have a greater stake in their students' success after graduation." Learn more about Income Share Agreements and Vemo Education

Architectural Digest on How MM.LaFleur Designed a Retail Concept Based on Female Empowerment - Sarah LaFleur's founding concept of MM.LaFleur, which launched e-commerce in 2013 and ventured into brick-and-mortar first through pop-ups and then permanent spaces (it now boasts long-term locations in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.). Though she's quick to refuse any credit for the brand's design ("I'm not the creative person," she tells me. "I'm the business one!"), LaFleur had a clear mandate when she started the company as a young consultant: It must not feel at all like her experiences in any department store. "It was just horrible," she recalls with a laugh, referring to clothes shopping after her day job. "You’re clawing through thousands of square feet of racks to find one item that might work for you. It was such a pain point in my life. So that was a huge piece of what we thought about when we were conceptualizing our brick-and mortar. Never having to wade through racks! The most important thing we did when we opened our spaces was to have no merchandise out." Book an appointment at an MM.LaFleur shop

WIRED on Boxed - Boxed, a wholesale e-commerce startup, has built autonomous guided vehicles, essentially robot carts, that roam its warehouse aisles while a crew of humans pick items from shelves. When a Boxed cart scoots up to an item it needs and flashes a red light, a worker drops the object onto the cart. These picker carts have led to “extreme savings on capital expenditures,” such as acquiring permits and installing traditional conveyor belts, says CEO Chieh Huang. Legacy retailers have asked to license the technology, but Boxed has demurred. Start a Group Order at Boxed

Introducing Quick Lookup: A Faster Way to Request Lab Supplies on Quartzy-  Quartzy, the only free online laboratory supply management and ordering platform, followed the recent launch of the Quartzy Shop with another product improvement. Users can now enjoy the convenience of having direct access to the supplies their lab needs on one platform, but many of them brought to our attention how they were finding themselves jumping between the Shop and their request history to figure out if they wanted to go with a particular offer. Quartzy incorporated this feedback into the design of Quick Lookup so that now, whenever a user goes to add a new request, they’ll also have visibility into relevant matches from the Shop in addition to their request history. Get started with Quartzy

What is a 409A valuation? - Unlike public companies where value is set by the market, private companies use independent appraisers to assess their value. A 409A valuation is an independent appraisal of the fair market value (FMV) of a private company’s common stock that determines the “strike price” for equity. If your company is planning to offer options, you’ll need a 409A valuation. Carta can help you understand the basics of 409A, so you can make an informed decision when choosing a valuation provider. Request a demo of Carta

Boxed launches a free-shipping membership program — and it has one big advantage over Amazon Prime - Boxed says the key benefit for Boxed Up is free "priority shipping" for all orders over $20 for members, who will also see 2% cash rewards on what they spend, price-matching for competitors, and "VIP customer service." Boxed says there will be rotating giveaways and discounts, including 15% off items in Boxed's private label, Prince & Spring, at launch. Slicing Subscription Costs - Trims’ subscription-canceling service is free — and saves quite a bit of time versus having to do it all myself — not to mention that it only took a few seconds to root out subscriptions I didn’t even realize I had (when did I sign up for an eFax service?!). When I head back to the dashboard, Trim also notifies me that it can save $50 on my monthly Comcast bill — which would be great since we just switched to Comcast last month and thought we had a great deal. I gave Trim my Comcast information and received an email a few days later that it was not able to find a lower price. Trims’ Co-Founder and CEO Thomas Smyth told me that the company uses a combination of bots and people to snag a better price on common household services and that they take 25% of the annualized savings. Find ways to save with Trim

Drone Industry Leaders: AirMap’s New CEO is an Optimist - AirMap‘s new CEO, David Hose, is an optimist when it comes to the drone industry.  The recently named head of one of the world’s leading drone operations platforms has a lot to be hopeful about: the company estimates that over 85% of the drone economy is currently connected to their platform.  With drone forecasts growing every day and new projects across the globe, AirMap is poised to expand all over the world – and David Hose is in a great position to lead them forward. “Global is definitely the headline – we will make a shift from product development to getting the product into the market,” he says, commenting that the company is already involved in major projects internationally, like the recently announced European UTM project.  “As LAANC is a game-changer in the U.S., there are similar developments around the world.  AirMap’s experience is perfect for that.” While the company is focused on market growth, they’re still continually adding new functionality to provide clarity for operators everywhere.  The core purpose of the map, he says, is to educate people about where they can and cannot fly – good for both operators and regulators.  They’ll keep developing their product towards that goal. “We want to make our application the safest in the world,” says Hose. Get started with Automated Airspace Authorization for Developers

Factual Case Study: Toys ‘R’ Us Foot Traffic Analysis Reveals Challenges in Smaller Markets - The results of a new foot traffic analysis conducted by the location data firm Factual reveal that Toys “R” Us’ demise could just as easily be blamed on stiff competition from within the brick-and-mortar retail market. In a foot traffic analysis conducted between November 2017 and January 2018, Factual’s data science team found that Toys “R” Us struggled most in smaller markets. On average, competitors like Walmart and Target saw 20x more foot traffic than Toys R Us in small markets, which included Biloxi, Mississippi, Tucson, Arizona, and Dayton, Ohio. The data suggest that shoppers in these smaller markets preferred “one-stop-shops” over specialized stores. Contact the Factual sales team to learn more

This allows us to offer luxury clothing that is practically and thoughtfully designed at a direct-to-consumer price point.” Her customers are lawyers, congresswomen, financial professionals and top executives who aren’t set to a 9 to 5 schedule. “If there’s one thing that defines the MM.LaFleur customer,” she says, “it’s that her most precious commodity is time. That’s where our personal stylists come in.” “Our value to the customer really is threefold,” LaFleur says. “Luxury workwear that is both practical and elegant, complimentary personal-styling (available online and off), and content that resonates with the multidimensional woman of purpose. All three pillars allow us to uniquely address the needs of professional women in a nuanced way.” Book an appointment at an MM.LaFleur shop

SeatGeek Partners With NFL in League's New Approach to Ticketing - SeatGeek is becoming a distribution partner of the National Football League, putting the mobile-first startup alongside larger rivals Ticketmaster and StubHub in the league’s new approach to ticketing. “Our goal has been to prove to teams that they will benefit from being open, as opposed to the closed, legacy systems,” said SeatGeek co-founder Russ D’Souza. “Now the largest league in the world is embracing the concept, and we’re thrilled to be part of that network.” The new approach to ticketing allows NFL franchises to sell in more places, all while keeping data from the transactions, which is important for both security and fan outreach. Many in the ticket industry consider it the future of the marketplace, and the NFL is the first U.S. sports league to embrace it with all of its teams. For SeatGeek, the deal moves it alongside the industry’s biggest companies for access to NFL inventory. Football fans will be able to buy tickets instantaneously and transfer them seamlessly through the SeatGeek site -- all with the guarantee that the ticket is real and hasn’t been double-sold. Learn more about SeatGeek Enterprise

Restaurant group B.GOOD selects Toast for its data accessibility, integration capabilities, and cloud-based enterprise management - Toast, the all-in-one restaurant technology platform and one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the U.S., today announced its partnership with B.GOOD, an international fast-casual restaurant concept serving fresh, locally sourced “food with roots.”  Toast is the restaurant management platform for all 50+ B.GOOD North America locations. “Data quality was the primary reason we started looking for a new POS system; our former provider didn’t offer the kind of data access needed to grow with our business,” says Austin Brinson, B.GOOD’s  vice president of analytics. “There were a lot of options in the market, but very few that were aligned with our focus on data and integrations. Toast was different. Toast allows us to take our reporting a couple levels deeper - transforming the data into actionable insights.” Request a demo of Toast's all-in-one restaurant POS

How Boxed Is Carving Out Space in a Crowded Ecommerce Market - Boxedpegs itself as the online wholesale club for millennials who live in cities that want the benefits of buying in bulk but don’t want to necessarily pay a membership fee (or drive to one of those centers). Huang pointed to the company’s growth in Texas, where many residents own cars and can drive to these wholesale clubs—but they aren’t. “This is a time and patience problem,” Huang said. “What [these customers] don’t have is increasingly the time and patience to access wholesale savings.” Boxed’s numbers are proving that its customers—and the company—might be onto to something. Despite a limited product selection of about 1,600 items, the average order value of a box is $100, with eight to 10 items per order. While shipping costs are top of mind for Huang, the large basket size and automated fulfillment center help drive shipping costs down. For brands coming to Boxed’s platform, Huang touts the company’s ability to close the ROI loop as well as providing demographics and a consumer’s path to purchase data as well. “Brands are now coming into Boxed to spend on a cost per click platform that we built ourselves,” Huang said. Get essentials that fit your budget, delivered to your company for free with Boxed for Business

Virtru Launches Data Protection Platform to Combat Perimeter Security Failures - Virtru, a trusted provider of data protection and data privacy solutions to more than 8,000 organizations, today launched the Virtru Data Protection Platform. The Virtru platform allows enterprises and government agencies to easily secure and share their most sensitive data while maintaining control over who can access their content. Where traditional approaches provide offer porous walls around company systems or checkbox solutions that are too difficult for practical use, Virtru provides an easy-to-use alternative that protects enterprise data wherever it’s shared. “Breaches like Sony, the DNC, and countless others are proof the most the $100 billion cybersecurity industry is selling snake oil,” said John Ackerly, CEO of Virtru.  “It’s either checkbox compliance, designed for a bygone era when all your information could be safely locked down inside your firewall, or it’s too difficult for practical use. We’ve taken a different approach -- we protect corporate data wherever it travels. And we make it easy enough for real humans to use.” The Virtru Data Protection Platform allows authorized users to easily protect and control sensitive information regardless of where it’s been created, stored or shared. Contact the Virtru team to learn more

Through RaiseMe, she was also able to compare college requirements and acceptance rates. “Every night that I stayed up doing homework…I wanted to give up but…I could not because I have a goal…to reach,” she said when she was interviewed as a part of RaiseMe’s #StudentSpotlight series. Charline earned $27,653 towards college tuition and she now attends Barry University in Miami, Florida. Income Share Agreements: A Student Loan Alternative - Purdue University, a public land grant university in West Lafayette, Indiana, has distributed about $2 million to 160 students via its Back-a-Boiler ISA program, which started in 2016. Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Clarkson University, in Potsdam, New York — both private institutions — have started ISA programs more recently. All three are working with Vemo Education to design and implement their ISA program. Kevin James, founder and CEO of Better Future Forward, which works with another nonprofit, College Possible, to help low-income students afford college through ISAs, doesn’t buy the criticism of ISAs. “We think of ISAs as a progressive financing tool that basically align payments with ability to pay,” says James. And after graduation a student with an ISA has the freedom “to do what they like with their life … to make the choices they want to make,” says James noting that is is not necessarily the case for students who have taken out loans. They have to find a way to make their loan payments. Learn more about how Vemo Education can help your college or university

Skyguide & AirMap Join Forces to Develop Europe's First National Drone Traffic Management System - Skyguide, the Swiss air navigation service provider, and AirMap, the leading global airspace management platform for drones, announced that they will develop and deploy the first national drone traffic management system in Europe. The system will be the first national deployment of U-space, Europe's vision for the digital infrastructure that will support safe and secure access to European skies for millions of drones. Much like the U.S. "Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM)" initiative, U-space is a collaborative effort to enable situational awareness, data exchange, and digital communication for the European drone ecosystem. "After a year of successful collaboration with AirMap, we expect that the AirMap UTM platform meets the highest standards required for a Swiss U-space," says Klaus Meier, Chief Information Officer of skyguide. With the anonymous data we collect, we’re uniquely positioned to demystify employee tenure trends. We hope this analysis provides meaningful insights for founders, managers, employees, and candidates. As expected, job tenure at startups is lower than job tenure in other industries. MM.LaFleur Atlanta pop-up offers workwear for busy women who hate to shop - In 2013, Sarah LaFleur hoped to make the process easier when she founded MM.LaFleur, a web-based clothing brand designed to help women find work appropriate clothing with minimal effort. Unlike subscription boxes that combine a range of brands into a box based on preferences, MM.LaFleur offered its Bento Box, a curated collection of four to six proprietary designs for professional women on the go. Also unlike a subscription boxes, the Bento Box is not a subscription. There is no commitment. Customers can request a box whenever they need a wardrobe update. Though she never intended to take the brand into a brick and mortar environment, when LaFleur began hosting pop-ups in New York City sales exploded overnight. Several internet-breaking styles later, the company opened additional showrooms in Chicago and Washington, DC and pop-up locations in six more cities including the Atlanta Pop-up which opened March 5 at the Shops Buckhead Atlanta. Book an appointment at an MM.LaFleur shop

Kidpreneur Maddy Birch Builds Business Selling Used Lacrosse Equipment Online - Birch, a 16-year-old high school student, originally heard about SidelineSwap from her brother a couple years ago. But at the time she didn’t think much of it. Then when she was looking to earn a little extra income this year, she thought about all the expensive lacrosse goalie equipment she had in her garage. Birch said in a phone interview with Small Business Trends, “In the past I had just gone to Play It Again Sports or a store like that [to trade in the equipment], and I was just sick of getting only like $30 back on a $100 helmet. I thought about using Craigslist, but it was too broad and it can be unsafe. So then I remembered my brother had told me about SidelineSwap.” After making her first sale, Birch was pleased with the return on her investment and the relative ease of the process. So she kept going. Since then, she’s made about $1,930 from selling 15 different pieces of equipment to buyers on the site. Buy and Sell on SidelineSwap

Springfield's longstanding commitment to college readiness and student success makes them a perfect new addition to RaiseMe's platform." Learn more about how RaiseMe can help your college or university

Paying for college as a percentage of future earnings - Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., led the way with a program called “Back a Boiler” in 2016. According to the program’s website, 160 students from across 79 majors have taken advantage of $2.2 million in funding. These funds are backed by the Purdue Research Foundation, a nonprofit corporation set up by a former president of the Purdue University Board of Trustees. The university works with Vemo Education, a Virginia-based firm, to provide the infrastructure for the program. Purdue’s ISAs have a standard payback period of about 10 years, with a six-month grace period post-graduation before payments begin. Getting more specific, let’s take an example of a Purdue student who is a rising senior and an economics major with an ISA of $10,000. The program requires that he or she pay 3.38 percent of an anticipated salary of $47,000 after graduation for 100 months. This ISA would lead to a total amount paid back of $15,673, compared to a private loan of $10,000 at 9.5 percent fixed interest, which would total $17,126 at the end of a typical 10-year term. Thus, less paid back. Learn more about how Vemo Education can help your college or university

CVG, FAA partner with AirMap for protocols on how drones can operate within five miles of the airport - Drone operators are now able to operate in certain areas within five miles of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) thanks to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) new Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) program. Prior to LAANC and other recent technology enhancements, drones were prohibited within five miles of any airport. In conjunction with this effort and in order to protect the safety of the flying public, CVG partnered with several Kentucky airports as well as Kentucky State Representative Diane St. Onge to establish Kentucky HB540, the airport safety law. This law requires coordination with CVG as well as the FAA to operate drones in critical areas of the airport, primarily the ends of runways during takeoff and landing. CVG and the FAA have both independently partnered with AirMap to execute the LAANC protocols and provisions of Kentucky HB540, to provide seamless and efficient coordination and notification process for drone operators. Get started with Automated Airspace Authorization for Developers

Quartzy Launches Extensive Online Product Catalog of Over 2 Million Lab Supplies from More than 600 Manufacturers - Quartzy, the only free online laboratory management platform offering an extensive lab supply ordering system, announced today the launch of its Quartzy Catalog, creating a centralized place online where labs can research and buy supplies, find competitive pricing, coordinate buying across multiple centers, track supplies all the way through the order process, and organize their inventory once it arrives.  Combined with Quartzy’s free online laboratory management platform, labs now have an easy, cost-efficient way to order supplies and manage inventory from end to end across all of their multiple centers. “We have found Quartzy to be one of the most valuable laboratory management tools we've ever encountered,” said Justin Lenoff of Xerion Advanced Battery Corp. “Having the Quartzy Catalog integrated into the lab management platform is a major value add. Aside from consolidating our ordering workflow, the Quartzy Catalog is significantly cheaper and far more convenient than ordering from a supplier.  By consolidating all of this extra work and time we had spent on ordering and tracking supplies, we can now focus on the work we’re meant to do; accelerating scientific discoveries in our laboratory.” Get a demo of Quartzy's lab management software today

MM.LaFleur on the Future of Stores - Rachel Mann, director of offline retail at MM.LaFleur: "For us, it's about the human experience, a refuge from Alexa and all the choice and robots. I'm overwhelmed by it already ... it should be like you're meeting your friend and she's giving you good advice." It's clear that retailers and brands can't compete on Amazon's level, Mann said during a panel about integrating technology in stores, but she isn't worried the e-commerce giant is coming for the four-year-old women's workwear business, because specialty retail still has something Amazon does not — a human touch. The experience of an MM.LaFleur store should be so human, so relaxing and so personalized that the way employees are using data and personalization tools should be in the background, she said. For MM.LaFleur, relationships and services will continue to be an essential piece of its in-store growth as the company expands this year with more pop-up shops and locations. Book an appointment at an MM.LaFleur shop

SeatGeek enters the big four leagues with deals with the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans. Is there more to come? - After previously signing deals with Major League Soccer and several of its teams, the company and its mobile-focused SeatGeek Enterprise platform last November signed its first NFL and NBA primary deals with the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans. Both agreements will take effect this fall. SeatGeek, backed by more than $150 million in venture capital and last year’s purchase of Israeli ticketing software company TopTix, intends to pick up more agreements in the big four of North American sports leagues as individual team deals expire. “We’re confident this is just the beginning of a movement across the industry,” said SeatGeek co-founder Russ D’Souza. Learn more about SeatGeek Enterprise

How Ibotta Is Helping Every Day Consumers Save Time And Money - Ibottastarted out by providing rewards for everyday purposes in physical stores like grocery, mass and club store environments. And over time, Ibotta expanded outside of the grocery space into other big box environments with partners like Best Buy, JoAnn Fabrics and Hallmark. And more recently, Ibotta launched cash back rewards for online and mobile purchases so consumers can now start with Ibotta and earn rewards whenever they hail an Uber, book a hotel on Hotels.com, download a song or movie on iTunes or get food or alcohol delivered. Plus, Ibotta users can earn rewards for regular purchases on Amazon, Walmart.com, Jet.com and many other websites. What are Ibotta’s future goals? “To become the preferred, single starting point for all shopping decisions on your mobile device. And to do this not only in the U.S. but around the world. To fulfill our mission of saving everyday consumers time and money -- two of their most precious resources,” Ibotta CEO Bryan Leach concluded.  Learn more about partnering with Ibotta

A new way emerges to cover college tuition - Last fall, Point Loma Nazarene University began offering some of its 4,500 students money to pay for college in exchange for a percentage of their future earnings. The model, known as an income share agreement, requires colleges and students to take a chance on each other, a shared responsibility that attracted Point Loma. “It sends a message to the student that we’re in this with you,” said George Latter, vice president of finance and administrative services at Point Loma. “And unlike a grant, you have the prospect of these funds coming back in and creating a revolving form of financing.” Income share agreements, commonly called ISAs, have generated a lot of buzz since Purdue University introduced its program in 2016. Several private colleges are exploring income shares, according to Vemo Education, a Reston, Virginia, financial services firm that helps create the contracts. In the last month alone, Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, have entered the market. Learn more about how Vemo Education can help your college or university

LAANC Digital Airspace Authorization Makes its Debut for Third Party Developers - Any developer can start offering digital airspace authorization to their customers with LAANC Deep Linking today. Beginning in April, the LAANC prototype will expand into a national beta. By the end of the year, more than 500 towered airports across the United States will begin offering LAANC authorization. With more airspace open for business in the U.S., the AirMapcommunity will have more opportunities to build drone businesses and fly missions for real estate, insurance, inspections, construction, and more. Get started with Automated Airspace Authorization for Developers

How Boxed CEO Chieh Huang Makes Quick Decisions - In 2013, when Chieh Huang and his co-founders, Christopher Cheung, Jared Yaman, and William Fong launched bulk grocery e-commerce startup Boxed from his parents' garage in Edison, New Jersey, he says he had no boundaries or strategies in getting things done."I was doing everything at all times of day--emailing constantly, trying to juggle my job, my life," says Huang, who is now married with two children. Factual CEO Gil Elbaz on The Need for ‘Neutral’ Data and What it Means for Marketers - Recently, the neutral data category has gone from a misunderstood and underappreciated concept to a growing necessity in the martech ecosystem. An increasing number of companies today are partially or fully re-orienting themselves around the new neutral data model, especially in marketing. There are two ways a company can approach their data and media strategy — purchase media pre-bundled with data, or purchase data independently from media. Those who want transparency and control of the data tend to go with the former and those who prefer the simplest one-stop solution tend to go with the latter. Below, we outline the pros to each approach. Contact the Factual sales team to learn more

SidelineSwap to Award $3K in Scholarship Funds to Student Athletes Who Show Passion for their Sport - Most American families spend between $100 and $499 per month on sports for their kids. Sports like lacrosse, hockey, golf and skiing have always had a high cost barrier to entry, often leaving aspiring athletes unable to pursue their passion. SidelineSwap, an online marketplace that makes it easy to buy and sell sports gear, announces its second annual Gear For a Year Scholarships, offering six $500 scholarships to student athletes to purchase gear for their upcoming season. Applications are open until February 1 and the winners will be announced on March 1, 2018.

December 2017 Updates from Teamworthy Ventures

LAFC Signs SeatGeek As Official Ticketing Partner - For LAFC, the deal isn't as much about getting fans into the stadium - the team expects to sell out in its debut season - as it is about knowing who those fans are, since SeatGeek's mobile platform allows the team to capture fan identities. "That's the game now, for the team owners and venue operators, is trying to understand who's in the building," says LAFC chief business officer Larry Freedman. "And once you can understand who's in the building, you have a better opportunity to improve your level of engagement with that fan." Learn more about SeatGeek Enterprise

Quartzy Accelerates Scientific Discovery By Making Labs More Efficient - "Most of us here at Quartzy worked in a lab at some point so we all understood all the little things that waste time in a lab. Updating chemical inventory spreadsheets before an inspection, forgetting to get something ordered before a shipping cut off, lab supplies getting back ordered and never communicated to the scientists, playing phone tag with reps to get better pricing on chemicals, the list is endless. When you really look at it, most scientists waste 25-50% of their time on inventory and ordering inefficiencies. Quartzy brings that down to almost zero through our seamless inventory management and order request handling. If you are using Quartzy to communicate what needs to be purchased then you will never again have another duplicate order, misplaced package, or out of date lab inventory. One of our users wrote in just last week saying that she was trying to justify implementing Quartzy’s adoption at her biotech and when she did the analysis, she found that Quartzy would save their lab manager 83% of their time every day. This is why we do what we do." Get a demo of Quartzy's lab management software today

I look forward to sharing in the team's relentless commitment to providing users a more fun and rewarding shopping experience." Prior to Ibotta, Majmudar was Senior Vice President of Customer Experience at Caribou Coffee, Inc., and Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Inc., where he was responsible for creating and implementing new customer experience strategies across multiple brands. AirMap and Airways to trial drone traffic management system in New Zealand- Airways chief executive Graeme Sumner said: “The trial is an important step in investigating how Airways could develop a nationwide UTM system that safely integrates UAVs into New Zealand’s wider air traffic control network. “There is potential for New Zealand to become a test-bed for the UAV industry through the implementation of a system that supports growth and development in a safe manner.” Learn more about AirMap airspace authorization

Digital Communications Your Business Should Be Encrypting And Securing- An email encryption service like Virtru makes all of these tedious situations easier. As explained in a detailed breakdown of how Virtru’s services supplement Microsoft and Azure, “Virtru users can read emails directly from their inboxes. Non-Virtru users can read and respond to emails from a web-based Secure Reader after authenticating with their existing credentials. Reading an email secured by Virtru will not require a new password or new software.” The difference is Virtru scans end-user content before its sent. This makes it compliant with regulations like HIPAA. Also, it prevents Microsoft from accessing your data. Unlike Azure RMS, Virtru’s usage and access controls are available to anyone that accesses your content. These controls include revoking message access, message expiration times, forwarding tracking, receipt reading, and PDF watermarking. Contact the Virtru team to learn more

Unboxing Boxed: 5 Questions With CMO Jackson Jeyanayagam - A third example at Boxed is our biddable marketplace within our platform; something fairly unique in the e-commerce world (aside from what Amazon has been doing). We’ve always sold placements on the site and give the CPG’s (consumer packaged goods companies) a chance to do custom promos and deals, but we’ve never had a CPC (cost-per-click) bidding model where they can come on and bid for certain audiences in certain occasions or placements on the site (or both). We’ve now built that out and have been rolling it out with a few partners, so it’s pretty new but that’s an area where technology is at the center of the experience. Become a Boxed retailer or vendor partner

Lively 2017 HSA Year in Review - Every year more and more Americans create dedicated savings for their health and 2017 was no exception. Did you know that over 21 million Americans have an HSA? In fact, the HSA is growing at a faster rate than the 401(k) industry. 2017 will finish with an estimated $44.7 billion in HSA assets (deposits and investments). This was a 23% increased from the previous year. More HSA assets mean more money dedicated to health savings and long-term health financial opportunities. This was truly a year to invest in your health. The average HSA account investment holder has over $15k in assets. This totals over $7.3 billion of estimated investment assets in 2017, which was a 44% increase from the previous year. While HSAs provide a clear path to pay for current year out-of-pocket medical expenses, this growth shows the value of longer-term savings opportunities. Learn how to offer a Lively HSA to your team

Factual’s VP of Agencies and Strategic Partnerships Talks Cross-Device Targeting and the Best Strategy for Real-Time Location Data - "Tactics are really dependent on the goals of the campaign and the audience the advertiser is trying to reach. When advertisers craft their campaign, they need to have an in-depth understanding of a consumer’s behavior relevant to their brand, so they know what will drive the greatest ROI. For example, Factual’s Geopulse Proximity is used to target people based on where they are in real time, using their latitude and longitude. This opens the door for broader targeting tactics to reach people at or near a place and can drive them in store to make a purchase. You can also optimize using targeting based on real world behaviors of people who visit a place frequently. Cross-device targeting allows you to message them wherever they may be, whether that’s in-app or mobile web on a smartphone/tablet, or at home or work on a desktop computer." Contact the Factual sales team to learn more

SEC Rule 144: Set your company up for long-term regulatory success with Carta - With Carta, the original Rule 144 date will be attached to issuances of common and preferred stock certificates. In most instances, the date will be attached to the shares as they are transferred, converted, or sold, allowing companies to automatically track this regulatory requirement. Transfers and repurchases completed on the platform require the Rule 144 date to be included before the transaction can be processed, ensuring this information is always attached to the correct issuance. Request a Carta demo

In addition to offering smart-but-cool work wear styles, MM.LaFleur has a personal styling service that delivers a “bento box” of items selected on the basis of a questionnaire users fill out. Back Story: As a young woman in finance, I was always frustrated with my work wear options. So I started MM.LaFleur to take the work — and the stress — out of shopping for work. Preflight checks are easier than ever before, autofilling this information in each mission plan to help operators move more quickly from field, to flight, to finish. Airspace rules, temporary flight restrictions, and the locations of schools, prisons, hospitals, power plants, and more can be viewed with just a tap. 4 Ways Marketers Can Use Location Data This Holiday Season - In our technology-driven world, marketers need to be creative with their advertising strategies this holiday season. The retail landscape has evolved a great deal over the past few years with new mobile advances, but consumers are still making the majority of purchases in store, including 53 percent of tech savvy millennials. While online browsing patterns are valuable, they are not always the best indicator of purchase intent. The places consumers move about in the physical world tell a better story of consumer path to purchase. So, how can you leverage location data to hone in on your niche target audiences this holiday season? Contact the Factual sales team to learn more

How Carta (formerly eShares) helps with an IPO - An IPO is cause for celebration. Founders, investors, and employees all share the rewards commensurate to stakeholders and owners putting in years of hard work. The foundation of that collective ownership is the equity management platform. Sophisticated companies can tell a complete story based on their statement of cash flows, income statements, and balance sheets. However, a more compelling story can be told by utilizing a company’s historical record of ownership through Carta. The most important time to get the ownership story correct is before an IPO. Carta’s platform helps companies create the right narrative before, during, and after the public offering. Request a Carta demo

How Food52 Used Email to Handle Thanksgiving and Cyber Weekend - The brand redesigned their Shop pages the week before Thanksgiving and invested in back-up servers that could handle any wild traffic increases; with lessons learned from previous years (on Black Friday 2016, the site’s sales tax calculator broke down, making it a “tax free weekend” for shoppers) and additional marketing support from Agency Within, the many teams of Food52 were as prepared as they could be. Most emails, especially those including marketing messaging, had backup plans in case sales weren’t hitting their goals; editorial franchises and creative imagery shoots had been planned in advance to provide both fresh content and much-needed advice; and, with the help of online services like Google Drive’s products and Slack’s messaging service, the company was ready to enjoy the holiday, be there for its readers and direct them to its hundreds of unique products. Visit the Food52 Shop today

Lively's Free HSA - HSAs help save tax-free dollars for healthcare costs and have always helped offset the costs of healthcare, but the fees associated with them have hurt these cost savings. Why can’t there be a 100% free HSA that makes it simple and easy to save money for healthcare? This was one of the founding principals of Lively and our free HSA. Co-Founder Alex Cyriac explains, “What concerns us is that existing HSA companies are clunky, outdated, and expensive. In fact, we found certain providers didn’t make it easy to get your money out when you needed it most. They take weeks to process paperwork, offer lackluster customer service and nickel and dime their customers with hidden fees like debit card usage, account statements, legal, transfer, etc.” Learn how to offer a Lively HSA to your team

Join Atlas Obscura on a culinary trip to Mexico City - On this 5-day excursion in and around Mexico City, we’ll experience moments when the city's numerous identities are expressed and aligned perfectly—for instance, enjoying a street snack of tacos al pastor while taking in a hidden Diego Rivera mural. But we’ll also be looking for the fractures, zooming in on specific influences: a heady Aztec brew, or a colonial-era mole recipe, or the unique, pre-Hispanic floating farms still in use today. We'll be sure to also head out of the center city in an attempt to isolate and better understand these culinary traditions. From street food to contemporary Mexican dining trends, traditional restaurants to meals in local homes, our focus throughout the trip will be food and the people who make it. On the periphery of our tastebuds will be the history, art, architecture, landscape, agriculture, and street life that brings everything together. This adventure is limited to only 13 hungry explorers. View more Atlas Obscura Trips

SeatGeek signs up Facebook as primary ticketing distributor - Ticketing platform SeatGeek has signed Facebook up as a distribution partner, allowing sports fans and gig-goers to buy tickets directly through the world’s biggest social network. The first company to tap this new tie-up between SeatGeek and Facebook is Sporting Kansas City, a soccer team with an average attendance of around 20,000. SeatGeek was already an official primary ticketing partner of Major League Soccer (MLS), and by extension Sporting Kansas City, which effectively allows a club’s tickets to be sold on any website or application of a team’s choosing, providing the website or app in question is under the organizer’s direct control or in a partnership with SeatGeek. And that is basically what today’s announcement with Facebook is all about — it will allow any company that runs events to sell tickets through SeatGeek on Facebook. Learn more about SeatGeek Open

Ibotta Reveals Best and Worst Places to Trick or Treat, Best Day to Buy Candy- The findings, which included an analysis of 150,000 item-level receipts for candy bought the week before Halloween in 2015 and 2016, revealed that Oregonians spent more on Halloween candy than residents of any other state, an average of $40.29, with Washington, New Jersey, Utah and California rounding out the top five best states for trick-or-treaters. Ibotta also looked at the average price of candy in the same timeframe and found that consumers got the best deals on candy four days before Halloween, when the average price as $1.94 per unit. That was in stark contrast to October 30, when the median cost rose to $2.75, making Halloween Eve the worst day to save money on candy. This may be attributed to shoppers making purchase decisions based on what is still available on store shelves rather than comparison shopping for a better deal. Learn more about partnering with Ibotta

Automated Airspace Authorization is Here - Easy, digital, and automated authorization in U.S. controlled airspace is ready for takeoff. We’re proud to announce that AirMap is a UAS Service Supplier (U.S.S.) of the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (L.A.A.N.C.). That means that commercial drone operators can request digital airspace authorization in controlled airspace through the very same AirMap mobile app that they use to plan their missions, review airspace advisories, and receive live traffic alerts. Drone operators can apply for two types of authorization with AirMap: automated authorization for flights within pre-approved zones and altitudes, and manual authorization for flights outside of pre-approved zones and altitudes that require manual approval by ATC. Planning for a mission ahead of time? Apply for authorization up to 30 days in advance. Adjusting a flight plan or responding to a last-minute customer request? You’ll know within seconds if your flight has been authorized, even if you’re on the go. Learn more about AirMap airspace authorization

NYT: The Benefits of HSAs - Many H.S.A.s, however, require that you have a minimum amount saved — say, $1,000 — before you can invest. The idea is that you should have some money set aside before you take investment risks. “If you will need the funds in the near future to pay medical bills, it may not make sense to invest,” said Roy Ramthun, an H.S.A. consultant. But some account providers let you invest at any time. The health finance start-up Lively, for instance, allows H.S.A. participants to invest with no minimum balance. Lively offers a basic H.S.A. free, or charges users a flat $2.50 a month to invest in low-cost mutual funds and exchange-traded funds through the online brokerage firm TD Ameritrade. Learn how to offer a Lively HSA to your team

Haystack Partners is now Teamworthy Ventures

Dear friends and colleagues,

This summer we saw an opportunity to provide greater clarity to entrepreneurs and our partners about the mission and focus of our work, which at times was obscured by references to "needles in haystacks" instead of our true inspiration, which is the gritty teamwork required to harvest hay from a field and stack it in a barn. Today we are proud to share our new name: Teamworthy Ventures. The name Teamworthy reflects our purpose, which is to invest in great entrepreneurial teams and to strive to be worthy partners in their ventures. If we do our job, we will also succeed in helping to build companies that are "teamworthy", that is, companies made up of entrepreneurial teams that are fit and ready for the long and often demanding voyage of building a great company.

While our name has changed, our strategy and way of operating have not. We will continue to develop long-term relationships with talented and trustworthy entrepreneurial teams, and to invest in their ventures at the seed, early, or growth stage. We will continue to strive to be worthy partners by connecting promising entrepreneurs to our network of other successful entrepreneurs and partners to help them build innovative companies of purpose, value, and integrity. We will continue to assist our entrepreneurs with helpful introductions to new customers, partners, and team members.

Our areas of investment focus will continue to be in consumer and enterprise software and software-enabled services businesses in the following sub-sectors: Marketplaces, Mobile Commerce, Vertical and SMB SaaS, Information Services, Edtech, Fintech, Sports Tech, Travel Tech, Developer Tools and APIs, Marketing and Ad Tech, Imaging and Sensor Networks, and Health IT. On a regular basis, we evaluate the sub-sectors and investment themes we are focused on and re-allocate our time accordingly.

With this name change, we are also happy to announce that we have closed our first fund with approximately $41 million in total commitments. Joining our final close were successful entrepreneurs from our portfolio, experienced executives, and seasoned professional investors. Our Limited Partners share our long-term investment strategy and passion for supporting talented and trustworthy teams. We are grateful for their confidence and partnership.

We welcome your feedback and we will continue to provide additional information in the coming weeks at www.teamworthy.com

Thank you for your support,

Sounders FC replaces Ticketmaster with SeatGeek’s tech-fueled ticketing platform - Sounders FC COO Bart Wiley told GeekWire that improving the fan experience was the primary reason for why the club went with SeatGeek. eShares acquires Silicon Valley Bank Analytics - At eShares, we want to do two things with the business. First, convert SVBA's project-based 409A valuations into subscription-based valuations on our platform. This drives down the cost of 409A valuation and allows us to perform valuations within 7-10 days. Second, provide a safe landing for SVBA customers. When valuation firms shut down, customers are left unprotected because no one is available to defend future audits. SVBA acted responsibly by selling us both their assets (the customers and employees) and their liabilities (obligations to defend 409A valuations). Join eShares and get 100% off your onboarding fee

Food52's Wholesome Means to Branding Success - In the early days, it used to be that you just "knew" Food52 when you saw it. As we've expanded so quickly, we've codified some things -- for instance, we have a style book and of course, the two of us, as well as our Creative Director (our first hire), Kristen Miglore, are always keeping an eye on things. But it's also important that our brand continues to evolve. Static brands become stale. We make sure new writers and new buyers have the freedom to try out new things and let our audience be the judge. We get it wrong sometimes, but that's also part of our brand. We own our mistakes and keep looking forward. Visit Food52
